Google mail

Google Operating System has reported that google talk within gmail may soon offer updates on your friends’ activities in other google services. Google’s gmail code suggests that users will be able to delete the updates which they do not wish to receive or reply to the updates or even email those updates. So far it is not very clear as to what kind of updates will be made available in google talk within gmail, but there is a high likelihood that they will be updates of your gmail contacts in other google services.

Picasa Web Albums already display updates of the picasa web albums of people you’ve subscribed to, who may not necessarily be from your gmail contacts. Recently google also introduced a feature in orkut which displays updates from your friends, changes they have made in their orkut profile, new images or videos they have added. Google reader has started to display the shared items from your gmail contacts. Google shared stuff also shows web pages that have been shared by your contacts, these will be pages or links that you wish to share with your friends and others on the web.

It is likely that google talk within gmail will be gathering all this kind of information from your gmail contacts and will be displaying them summarize. Google plans to show them as a continuous stream similar to the newsfeeds of Facebook. This has spurred a series of debates and discussions across the web regarding whether these updates are in fact a good idea or not. Especially because of the fact that gmail automatically adds people in your contacts list.

Several people believe that these series of features that google has started adding in most of their popular services are a serious privacy hazard. Many debate that these features are against the privacy norms that google should be following and feel rather insecure and offended by them. Many are thinking of either quit using google or stop using google’s several services. What are your thoughts about it?

Samsung AMOLED screen

It looks like Samsung is upping the ante in the OLED world, although not quite like Gizmodo predicted. The Korean manufacturer has announced that it is developing a 31-inch OLED TV with a thickness of just 4.3mm, and will be showcasing it in just two weeks’ time, at CES (Consumer Electronics Association) 7th-10th January in Las Vegas.

Right now, there are no details on when the 31-inch Samsung AM-OLED display will be available—or how much the thing will cost. Samsung is, however, already plowing ahead with mass-production of 14-incher OLEDs, which should be available sometime next year.

In 2005, Samsung Electronics’ LCD division shocked the industry by developing a 40-inch AM OLED panel by applying a less advanced amorphous Silicon (a-Si) process but failed to equip the panel for OLED TVs.

Yoo Eui-jin, vice president of Samsung SDI’s AM OLED Supervision, told Korean reporters at a press conference held in central Seoul. “We will develop 40- and 42-inch full high-definition AM OLED panels in 2010.”

According to iSuppli, a market research firm, OLED TV shipments are expected to reach an annual 1.2 million in 2012 from 8,000 this year.

Samsung is also currently pushing ahead with plans to introduce AM (Active Matrix) OLED screens for mobile phones and portable devices, rather than just TV.

AM-OLED, or active-matrix organic light-emitting diode technology, produces brighter images and use less power. Samsung’s OLED display has a lifespan of 35,000 hours, which makes it the best-performing OLED display so far. We will keep you updated on all the latest news from the AM-OLED display world.
