Acer axe plans to develop games console

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Acer’s senior VP James Wong had the blogosphere buzzing last when comments where made that hinted Acer would develop a games console. according to Engadget a UK spokesperson for Acer has clarified that there “was a major misunderstanding,” and outrightly asserted that the outfit was “not going to release any game console.” Instead, the idea is to “develop a high-end PC targeted at the serious gamer.” The laptop I’m currently using right now is developed by Acer and I would actually like to see them sticking to developing laptops and desktop computers for home and business use and letting the likes of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo rock on in the gaming market.

Sam and Max 203

Well after a long wait, Telltale has finally released Episode 3 of season 2 in the excellent Sam and Max series. I hope you all have played and the others, because this looks like a another brilliant adventure to get wrapped up in.

“Zombie attack! Droves of undead are converging in the streets. Now Sam & Max must confront their leader – a Eurotrash vampire with a style all his own. Are the Freelance Police cool enough to outsmart this emo before his flesh-eating army usurps the western world?”

It seems to full of exciting mini-games again, just like Moai Better Blues. It has the same usual suspects in, Sam, Max, Stinky, Bosco, Flint, Sybil and a full array of zombies and creatures of the night. OK, well i shouldn’t say any more just in case I give too much away. Check out the link for screenshots, videos, concept artwork and even a walkthrough. Then all you have to do is complete this and wait for the next episode, Chariot of the Dogs, which is going to be released on March 14th.

EA “We blew it”

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

RIP Bullfrog

John Riccitiello the CEO of EA has admitted that they “blew it” when they took over Westwood and bullfrog. “We at EA blew it, and to a degree I was involved in these things, so I blew it,” said Riccitiello at the DICE Summit in Las Vegas a few days back. “When I talked to the creators that populated these companies at the time, they felt like they were buried and stifled.”

Riccitiello went on to say “The command and conquer model doesn’t work, if you think you’re going to buy a developer and put your name on the label… you’re making a profound mistake.” EA took over Bullfrog back in 1995, Bullfrog were the creators of games such as Theme Park and Populous. Two years of after the take over Peter Molyneux had left. The exact same thing happened to Westwood, soon after being taken over.

Riccitiello is blaming how EA forces it’s own management styles upon the new development teams, which isn’t how they are used to working, so it hinders the creative process and put unnecessary stress on the teams. Riccitiello promises that this will not happen to their new development teams, Pandemic and Bioshock, and he says that EA is doing everything possible to keep the “company culture”.

I know it all good that EA have learned for thier mistakes, but mistakes like this shouldn’t have happened in the first place. It just a shame they have only just realised that it was thier fault after killing off Bullfrog and Westwood.

The New EA Games Division

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

EA

EA have apparently set up a new games division called, EA Blueprint. This new division will team up with smaller game developers and help with funding and project management. The strange thing is that EA have put two of its biggest brains on the job, Niel Young the Los Angeles general manager and Alan Yu the director of artist and repertoire.

The products of EA Blueprint will be brand extensions of existing EA games. The games made by Blueprint are mainly destined to be developed on social networks, such as Facebook. EA already have a game on Facebook called Facebook Smarty Pants, it’s very similar the Wii game.

Despite trying to keep a low profile, some sources are saying that the execs at EA have been dropping subtle hints about Blueprint, by squeezing ‘Bliueprnt’ into some of their feeds. Well it look like Blueprint is well on it’s way to be a new business model for EA, by making small scale games that are cheap to make and have millions of users, Facebook currently has about 62 million users worldwide and it is still growing with Fackbook’s recent language releases.
